Why Should You Buckle Up in the Car?

Why Should You Buckle Up in the Car It Could Save Your Life

Following the rules can seem lame, or uncool at times. However, rules are in place for a reason, and that reason is usually for our own safety. For example, the seatbelt laws in California are in place to protect us. For some reason, there are people who think it’s uncool to wear a seatbelt. They fail to realize that being dead is more uncool. Seatbelt laws in California are as follows according to the California Department of Motorized Vehicles:

  • Vehicles must contain properly functioning seat belts.
  • Any operator of a motor vehicle must wear a safety belt at all times.
  • All passengers 8 years old and older that are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall or taller, are required to wear a seat belt.
  • Children that are 8 years old and younger that are under 4 feet 9 inches tall must use a child safety seat.

Wearing a seatbelt can mean the difference between life and death in most cases. A seatbelt can hold you in your seat, and prevent you from being ejected from the car. We often overlook how much a car crash can affect us, and a seatbelt prevents our momentum from hurting us even more. This is why commercials are so adamant about people buckling up when in a vehicle.

Buckling up seems like a smart, reasonable thing to do, so why don’t we all do it? When we don’t wear a seatbelt while in the car, we are risking our lives. When we choose to not buckle up, we better have a good reason. The most common reason why people don’t buckle up, is because they’re in a hurry. They are running late for an important event, and they need to get going now. They do not take the few extra seconds to fasten their seatbelt before hurrying off. The thing is, that little inconvenience can save their lives.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) wants you be safe.Even though they may seem like bad guys for pulling you over to make sure you buckle up and drive safe, they are simply looking out for you. That is why they have several rules and laws in place for your safety. The laws become even more important when they involve the safety of children. The following is a list of child safety laws from the CHP website:
• Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat.
• Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
• Children who are 8 years of age OR have reached 4’9” in height may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be secured by a safety belt.
• Passengers who are 16 years of age and over are subject to California’s Mandatory Seat Belt law.

It’s simple to take five seconds of your time to buckle up. Wearing a seatbelt is lifesaving, and should be considered cool. If for some reason it’s uncool to your friends, family, or kids, make it cool for them. Explain that you value their life, and want them to buckle up so that they will be around for a long time. Follow the law, and buckle up to save your life.

Do You Know about Vaping Laws in California?

Do You Know about Vaping Laws in California

Smoking tobacco has always been a pretty big hobby. Lately, however, it has been facing unexpected competition. This has come in the form of electronic cigarettes. When a person uses an e-cig, they are inhaling water vapor with different additives, rather than inhaling tobacco smoke. While vaping is a slightly healthier option than smoking, it still faces restrictions just like tobacco products.

Even though e-cigs and other vaping products contain no tobacco, the state of California still classifies them as tobacco products. This means that the use of e-cigs faces many of the same restrictions of as regular cigarettes. This means that a person does need to be wary of some laws when using e-cigs.

In California, a person now has to be 21 or older in order to purchase any tobacco products. This includes vaporizers and other e-cigs. Members of the military are excluded from this law, meaning that an 18-year-old can purchase tobacco products provided they have a military ID. Interestingly, the law only prevents the selling or giving of tobacco products to minors, it does not make underage possession illegal.

The last things for e-cig users to be aware of is where they are allowed to use vape products. While second-hand smoke is not a major concern with these products, there usage has been restricted in certain areas such as:
• School grounds
• Public areas
• Workplaces

The trend of vaping is still relatively new, and that means lawmakers are still working out how to deal with it. This leads to them constantly making new laws and adjusting old ones. It is important for anyone who uses these products to keep up to date on all of the laws regarding this hobby.

Are Minors Allowed to Have Alcohol Under the Supervision of Their Parents?

Are Minors Allowed to Have Alcohol Under the Supervision of Their Parents

Some parents out there who are dealing with minors and drinking tend to take a different approach to the matter. Many parents would flat out ban their children from drinking until they are of legal age to do so. However, some parents prefer to allow their underage children to drink, but only under their supervision. The idea is that this way, the child can learn about alcohol and its effects under the watchful eye of the parent.

In many states around the country, this is a common practice. The problem with this method, is that it is actually illegal within the state of California. Here in California, minors are not even allowed to possess alcohol, and they definitely are not allowed to consume it.

An adult allowing any minor to consume alcohol in their home is against the law under Business and Professions Code 25658.2. Breaking this law is a misdemeanor offense, which means a person could face up 1 year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. What’s worse, is that would like only be one of the charges a person would face for allowing a minor to consume alcohol.

In all likelihood, a person could also be charged with Penal Code 272, which makes it illegal for anyone to help a minor commit an unlawful act, such as possessing and consuming alcohol. This is another misdemeanor offense and can earn a person up to a year in jail, and a possible fine of $2,500.

Things can get even worse if the minor then proceeds to get behind the wheel of a car and cause an accident, which is why it is best to simply wait until they are older before allowing them to have any alcohol. This way, everyone stays safe and no one ends up breaking the law.

What Is That Strangely Sweet Smelling Cloud Floating Your Way?

What Is That Strangely Sweet Smelling Cloud Floating Your Way

It’s a nice sunny day and you’re walking around outside. You’re strolling by some of your favorite shops on Main Street. The flowers are in bloom, and the fresh, crisp air smells amazing. As you’re window-shopping, looking for anything and everything, you notice a low hanging cloud.

This low hanging cloud is an odd shape. It lingers and then disappears. You catch a whiff of strawberry, coconut, and cheesecake. You’re confused because you’ve made it to the part of the street where there are no strawberries, coconuts, or cheesecakes around. Then another cloud appears, and it smells the same. You start following this trail of clouds. Eventually you realize where the clouds are coming from.

Your detective skills have led you to a person further down the street. It’s like they’re smoking a cigarette, but cigarettes don’t smell this good. It’s definitely not marijuana, because you do not smell skunk. You’re now curious as to what this cloud is and how it come to be.

When you ask this cloud making person, you find out about vaping. This new age thing is something that all the cool kids are doing apparently. Vaping is similar to smoking a cigarette, except it has different levels of nicotine, and no tobacco. Vaping is essentially smoking water vapors and flavors. However, there is more to it than that.

Vaping is usually done with an electric vaporizing contraption. You can put whatever you want in it and smoke it. If you want to smoke marijuana in one, you can with the right tools. Being able to control what you’re smoking has some benefits.

If you’re trying to quit smoking you can switch to vaping and control the amount of nicotine you get. You can purchase liquids to smoke with different levels of nicotine and eventually wean yourself off smoking.

It is important to know that even through vaping doesn’t seem dangerous, it still can be. You’re still smoking, or inhaling things into your body. Toxins, carcinogens, and other chemicals can enter your body from vaping. It’s important to be aware of what you are putting into your body. According to Vaping 360, a website designed to inform its audience of what vaping is, Popcorn lung can occur from vaping. Popcorn lung is a condition cause by inhaling too much artificial flavoring. Artificial flavoring is what is used in most liquids for vaping.

In addition, vaping devices can also explode. There have been several new stories including a vape exploding in someone’s face as they used it. They may overheat, or malfunction. This is a whole other kind of popcorn effect. There are several ways to prevent or limit the chances of this happening, but you can always just avoid vaping to avoid having it explode in your face.

Vaping is cool to some people. The cloud of fruity smells captures people’s attention all the time. The white fluffy clouds are mystifying. However it’s important to know that vaping can be addictive, and is considered a gateway to smoking other things. If you’re really fascinated by the clouds vaping produces, maybe you should go out and look at some real clouds.

Women’s Rights, A Friendly Reminder

Women’s Rights, A Friendly Reminder

Take a seat because we’re about to have a history lesson on women’s right. For some people this doesn’t seem like a very exciting topic. However, that is not the case. Women have gone through a lot to get where they are today, and it’s still not quite perfect. Things may be rough now with catcalling and unfair treatment, but things could be a lot worse.

Women around the world are not equal. In parts of the world, women are extremely limited to what they can wear, do, or be apart of. In some parts of the world, women are seriously harmed and punished for allowing themselves to be raped. While great strides have been made in women’s rights in some areas of the world, others are lagging very far behind.

Not only are women not equal internationally, even here in the US women still struggle with inequality. Some key facts in this argument come from the magazine Marie Claire, from their article titled 14 Ways Women Still Aren’t Equal:
• Women pay more for household goodssuch as deodorant, shirts, socks, etc.
• Women make, on average, 16% less money than men.
• Women in the military are more than likely to be raped or harassed by their fellow soldiers.
• Young women in high school have less sporting options.

Unfortunately, the facts don’t lie. Women have faced a lot of difficulties over the years and continue to do so. On a positive note, women have gained more rights over the years, which inches them closer to being completely equal with men. The following is a happy reminder of what women have accomplished thus far from the Huffington Post:
• 1922 – Women gain the right to marry a foreigner and keep their citizenship.
• 1960– Women could purchase birth control.
• 1968 – Women gained the right to have equal access to job listing.
• 1970 – Women gained the right to be paid the same as men for the work.
• 1974 – Women gained the right to get a credit card in their own name.
• 1983– Women could legally get abortions.
• 1978– Women could work without discrimination due to pregnancy.
• 1985– Women could divorce their husbands because of “irreconcilabledifferences.”
• 1986 – Women could seek damages for sexual harassment in the workplace.
• 1993– Marital rape became a criminal offense in all 50 states.
• 1998– Women can access the morning after pill.
• 2009– Women could file complaints about pay discrimination.
• 2013– Woman are allowed to fight on the front lines.
• 2015– Women could marry other women.

You can’t ignore that women are definitely treated differently than men. The current Women’s right movement has been a muddy run for rights. There are still things that we as Americans can improve on, but we also must not forget that we’ve come pretty far. The modern girl will never have to worry about losing her American citizenship just because she fell in love with a person from another country. Even though women’s history and suffrage can be boring to some, it’s a key element to what is happening in the world today.

Thinking of Lying On Your Tax Returns? Think Again

Thinking of Lying On Your Tax Returns Think Again

If you haven’t figured it out yet, tax season is here. In fact, it is drawing to a close. Tax returns are due by April 17th. If you haven’t filed your taxes yet, you better hurry. The last thing you want to do is mess up your taxes and wind up in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Luckily, most people are able to file their taxes without incident.

One thing that will definitely get you noticed in a bad way, is lying on your taxes. Doing this is called tax fraud and it is very illegal. People can lie on their tax returns in several different ways, but the reason is usually always the same. People lie on their returns in order to get more money out of the government.

Tax fraud is defined as “an individual or business willfully and intentionally falsifying information on tax returns in order to limit how much they may owe, or increase how much they may receive.”

Naturally, the government does not like it when a person commits tax fraud and essentially takes money from them. This fact leads to very serious consequences when a person is eventually caught for tax fraud. Getting caught for tax fraud can earn a person, at minimum, 5 years in jail and fines around $500,000 plus any additional fees that may be tacked on.

Lying on your tax returns to earn a few extra bucks may seem like a good idea, but it isn’t worth it. You will end up paying far more than you received when you are charged with tax fraud. Of course, as the deadline to file approaches, you may want to focus more on getting your taxes done on time. You have less than a month left to file!

When Have Things Gone Too Far? When Dead Bodies End Up on the News.

When Have Things Gone Too Far When Dead Bodies End Up on the News

We all like a little bit of blood and guts in our films. Maybe even a little bit of gore, only if it’s done tastefully. Heroic actions in cinemas need to be contrasted with the ugly, right? What if it wasn’t a featured film with fake blood? What if instead of sitting in a movie theater you’re sitting at home with your family and you’re not watching a movie, but the news instead? You’d probably want to hide your child’s eyes because that is too graphic for them to see without Ironman swooping in to save the day.

How much does the public deserve to see/know when it comes to seeing dead bodies in a public setting?

At least with films there are ratings and warnings before the film begins. With advances in social media technology it seems like there are more issues developing with people showing and seeing too much. In recent months we’ve seen and heard of social media outlets allowing users to share graphic video content. By allowing graphic real life content to be shared on social media sites, we are crossing over into an ethical gray area.

Graphic videos of beheadings, suicides, and other horrible content do more harm than good. Vice, a blog website, released an article titled “How Does it Feel to Find a Dead Body”. The article contained three accounts from people who have seen a dead body. Each story ended with the witness feeling haunted. Seeing a corpse can trigger other health issues as well.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, severe life traumas such as seeing a dead body, witnessing death, or having a near-death experience can cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). People who experience PTSD report feeling haunted by their traumas. It’s reported that 8 out of 100 people will experience PTSD, but those figures aren’t completely accurate. Most PTSD cases go unreported or those who suffer from PTSD don’t come forward. Videos of beheadings can trigger past PTSD episodes or even cause new episodes. It’s natural to be curious about things in life and even in death. However, graphic content from real life situations like this can be more harmful than good.

Just because we can see it, film it, or show it, doesn’t mean we should. It’s an ethical line that you cross when posting graphic content to social media. YouTuber, Logan Paul recently crossed this line. Paul, in 2018 released a video showing the body of a suicide victim. YouTube allowed this video to remain posted for several hours. The video has since then been deleted by Paul, not YouTube. The Verge, a blog website, released an article titled “Not Just Logan Paul and YouTube – The Moral Compass of Social Media is Broken.” Within the article they point out several important things to consider when dealing with social media. The Verge questions the policies social media sites have, and why it is acceptable to allow graphic videos like this allowed. The article goes on to claim that the reason why Paul’s actions are acceptable is because of the culture, and environment we have created online. That is entirely opinion, and up to the readers/viewers to decide. There have been several incidents like Paul’s that have happened in recent months.

Snapchat footage of the Parkland 2018 shooting has surfaced. A quick Google search will provide anybody with the footage of bodies and gunshot noises in the background. The Las Vegas mass shooting also has candid footage of bodies and gunshot noises. People have a right to freedom of speech, which includes their freedom to share that footage. However what is the cost of that? What if scenarios of kids, veterans, or the mentally ill come to mind.

This topic in general is still fairly new due to the endless capabilities of the internet. In conclusion dead bodies shouldn’t be shown in the news or social media unless provided with ample warnings and are not obtainable to younger audiences. It’s too easy for kids to search up horrific real life crimes. There needs to be parental guides, and if not that, there needs to be some form of censorship of graphic content of beheadings, dead bodies, and shootings. Seeing these things in an action movie with your family is different from seeing it in a real life context.

Children See More Than You Think. Would They Be Proud of Your Driving?

Children See More Than You Think Would They Be Proud of Your Driving

Children see more than most people realize. They are always watching adults in order to learn how they should behave in the world. Due to this fact, it is incredibly important for a parent to watch what they do and say while around their kids. If they aren’t they could inadvertently teach their child a bad habit.

A parent always has to be on their best behavior when their kids are around. Kids will pick up on how you treat other people and how you talk to them. They will also be very much aware of how you drive.

If you are prone to speeding or weaving through traffic in a dangerous fashion, your kids will pick up on that. You could be teaching your children bad or dangerous habits without even realizing it. If you want to keep your child as safe as possible when they begin driving, you need set a good example for them.

Of course, this is easier said than done. Driving has this way of pushing our buttons and making everyone a bit angrier on the road. No matter how difficult it may be, keeping your temper will not only set a good example for your kids, it can also make your own driving experiences more enjoyable, or at the very least less frustrating.

If you exhibit safe driving practices, then your children will be more likely to do so as well. This can help keep them safe once they start driving on their own. That is all any parent really wants. If it means keeping your kids safe, then shouldn’t you do it?

Do You Care about Bullying? You Need to if You Want to See It Disappear

Do You Care about Bullying You Need to if You Want to See It Disappear

So many of the problems out there in the world could be fixed if people just cared for one another a little bit more. If people were more considerate and open-minded toward one another, then there would be less hurt feelings. One of the best ways to achieve this goal, is to get rid of bullying.

Now, this is a lot easier said than done. For the last thousands of years, people have constantly been trying to one up each other and prove their own superiority. One such way that they do this, is by belittling the people around them. This is what bullying is, and it leads to a lot of hatred and resentment. Any victim of bullying can tell you that.

Stopping kids, and people in general, from bullying is far more complicated than simply saying it needs to be stopped. Adults and parents need to do their part and set good examples for the kids in their lives. Children are much more observant than most people realize, and they can pick up on how we treat others. If a person is not careful, they can inadvertently teach a child to be a bully.

It is always important for a person to watch what they say to people, but this can prove to be difficult for kids. Children will often times say whatever is on their mind, and this can lead to bullying. It takes years for kids to develop the filter that most adults have. It is up to the parents to help guide the child and teach them what they should and shouldn’t say about other people.

Bullying will not just disappear overnight, but it can be eliminated. Everyone simply needs to work together to be more considerate of one another. Once people start caring for those around them, bullying will begin to disappear.

You Can’t Trust Everything Online, Even Reviews

You Can’t Trust Everything Online, Even Reviews

Anyone who has spent a lot of time on the internet knows that they can’t believe everything they read. While the internet is a great way to find information, not everything online is true or even remotely accurate. This is especially true for anything that is written by everyday people, and not professionals in their respective fields.

Unfortunately, this does include online reviews. As helpful as they can be, online reviews are only as helpful as talking to people themselves. Many adults are aware of the fact that everyone has different views and knowledge of life. This means that there are certain people you go to for advice on movies, and certain people who you go to for advice on home repair. The same goes for online reviews, though there is no way of knowing who is a credible source when it comes to reviews.

When looking at online reviews of anything, you need to be wary of the person who wrote it. Is this person experienced with this particular product or service, or is this their first time using it? Are the problems they encountered caused by the product or service, or were they caused by the person not knowing how to properly use said product or service? These are all questions that you should ask yourself while reading through reviews.

Another way to determine the validity of reviews, is to look at the numbers. How many five and one star reviews does the service or product have? If there are more positive than negative reviews, then using that product or service will probably be a safe bet.

Do You Believe in a Flu Season?

Do You Believe in a Flu Season

There are all kinds of people out there in the world, and all of them have their own believes and views. Some of them make sense, and others are just plain bizarre. Every once in a while, you hear of a belief that just seems too crazy to be true. For instance, some people think that there is no such thing as a flu season.

For those unaware, a flu season is classified as an annually recurring period of the year where there are consistently large sized outbreaks of the flu. These seasons typically coincide with the cold seasons, which vary from the Northern to Southern Hemispheres. The flu season lasts for roughly 6 weeks in each hemisphere. This is a trend that had been tracked and monitored for years now.

Recently, a televangelist told her followers that there was nothing to worry about when they brought their concerns of this year’s flu season to her. In case you didn’t know, a televangelist are Christian ministers, official or self-proclaimed, who spread their messages primarily through television broadcasts. When asked about the flu season, this televangelist told her followers that there is a duck season and a deer season, but there is no flu season. She informed them that Jesus gave them the flu shot and that redeemed them from the curse of the flu.

However, this televangelist’s followers were right to have some concerns. This flu season has been rather severe, quickly rivaling the 2014-2015 season. So far, this year’s flu season has claimed the lives of 37 children.

Now of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, there are some times when people’s opinions seem extremely questionable, especially when facts have been proven otherwise.

So, what do you think? Do you believe in a flu season, or is there not enough evidence to back that up?
